Introduction
There is a wealth of information about drugs and their effects on the web and rather than simply re-hash other people's information we have chosen in this section to provide a short outline about different types of drugs with links to specific pages with more detail.


A Different Approach
In contrast to many drug education organisations this website takes a Harm Reduction based approach to drug use. Therefore we have attempted to provide factual reality based information about drugs in order to empower people to make rational, informed, reasoned decisions about their drug use.

Alcohol
Since alcoholic drinks legal they are one of the most socially available drugs in New Zealand. The effect is mainly sedative and they tend to produce a drowsy relaxed feeling. They also have serious health consequences particularly when used by people who inject drugs.

Cannabis
Cannabis or Marijuana are derivatives of the hemp plant and are prepared for use in a number of forms such as oils, resins, leaf and bud. They generally produce a drowsy relaxed feeling,

Ecstasy
Ecstasy most resembles an amphetamine in its effects and should be viewed as a stimulant that lies on a continuum between purely psychedelic drugs like LSD and purely speed drugs like Methamphetamine.

Hallucinogens
These are a group of drugs which cause disruption to your sensory and thought processes. Made popular in the 1960's by acid or LSD, it also includes magic mushrooms, peyote and datura. Generally they produce disorientating and hallucinogenic effects (hence the name) To learn more about hallucinogens.

Inhalants
This group of drugs tend to fall into two distinct groups those which produce disorientation and are solvent based and those which speed up the metabolism and are chemical stimulants.

Opiates
These are a group of similar substances derived from the opium poppy and include codeine, morphine and heroin. They all have the effect of slowing your metabolic rate and at low doses making you feel drowsy and relaxed. This effect is sometimes call "narcotic" and is common to many types of drugs.

Party Drugs
These are a range of often unrelated substances which are often used to enhance dancing and party experiences. Most common is Ecstasy, but others such as Fantasy / GHB and ketamine are becoming more popular amongst clubbers in New Zealand. Generally they produce a warm empathetic disorientating effect.

Physical Enhancers
Many drugs produce physiological changes which can also change your physical abilities and appearance. Often these are used by bodybuilders, such as anabolic steroids.

Sedatives and Antidepressants
These are a range of pharmaceutically produced drugs which are used to treat people who are either anxious or depressed. Often when used in conjunction with other drugs their effects can change considerably. For more information.

Stimulants
These are a group of substances which increase your metabolic rate and your thought processes. the most common of which is amphetamine or SPEED. Most commonly they are used in social settings such as parties, nightclubs and bars. Many drug users enjoy the social aspect of using stimulants since at low doses they give a sense of self confidence and users often comment that it enhances social interaction by making them more talkative. Synthetic Narcotics
These chemically produced drugs are principally used therapeutically for treating pain in people who are ill. They include pethedine and methadone.
