Introduction
The range of injection equipment and accessories to safer drug use sold under the Needle Exchange Programme is quite large. Different types of outlets sell or distribute different types of equipment. The equipment available from the Needle Exchange Programme is controlled by government regulation.

Who Stocks What?
All needle exchanges and offices of NZPC stock the complete range of equipment listed here.

Most Level 2 outlets stock the items marked § since these are the most popular sizes. Other items are available to order.

Level 1 outlets stock only "packs" as described below.

Level 1 Outlets
The following equipment is approved by the Director-General of Health for sale from Level 1 outlets:-

Packs of 10 x 26G x 0.5" needles with 3ml capacity luer-lock syringes

Level 2 Outlets
The Director General of Health has approved the following injection equipment for sale from Level 2 outlets only, in addition to the equipment approved for Level 1 outlets. Level 2 outlets may choose to sell equipment from the following list. Level 2 outlets are not obliged to stock all the items listed, but may select items which they wish to sell.

Needle Configurations
The following needle sizes are available through the Programme. This list suggests the most appropriate use for each gauge needle.

16G x 1.5" body piercing
18G x 1.5" body peircing
20G x 1" drawing-up
22G x 1.5" § intramuscular
23G x 1" § intramuscular
26G x 0.5" § sub-cut IV
27G x 0.5" § intravenous
30G x 0.5" intravenous

Regardless of the brand, needles sold under the Needle Exchange Programme must comply with Australian Standard: 1946-1984 Hypodermic Needles - single use needles (sterile) for medical use or equivalent standard.



Syringe Configurations
3ml capacity luer-lock §
5ml capacity luer-lock §
10ml capacity luer-lock
20ml capacity luer-lock

Regardless of the brand, syringes sold under the Needle Exchange Programme must comply with Australian Standard:1094-1993 Medical equipment - Single use syringes (sterile) for general medical use or equivalent standard.

Combined Needle & Syringe Configurations
1ml syringe with 28G x 0.5" needle (Insulin - u100)
1ml syringe with 29G x 0.5" needle (Insulin - u100)

Regardless of the brand, combined needles and syringes sold under the programme must comply with Australian Standard: 1077-1992 Single use 1ml syringe for injection or equivalent standard.

Intravenous Infusion Sets (Butterflies)
25G needles

Regardless of the brand, intravenous infusion sets sold under the programme must comply with Australian Standard: 2485-1995 Single use winged intravenous devices (sterile) for general medical use or equivalent standard.
